This Week in the Studio. 10.05.22
Written by Jimmy
A disasterous overture, but Imp delivers and out of nowhere – a new song for our CD. Must have been the sunshine.
Let’s start with the Sun. A glorious Saturday in London, forcing us to spend a lot of our studio time outside in the back garden talking about putting in more studio time. So let’s start with a bit of ‘sun’ music:
1. Here Comes the Sun (Live, Prince’s Trust):
2. In the Sun, Joseph Arthur
3. Deep Blue Sea: Bob Schneider
Ok, now to our music. First, you’ll know from last week that we’re continuing to struggle with Efatuation Nation, the final song on the track that is supposed to be all our little rocker, equal to 71 Hours to Monday. Andy went Crash Test Dummies on us, with a grumpy low vocal. We decided we needed Imp to save us — she, of Invading London fame. As she tends to do, she rehearsed her vocal on the 90 minute car ride to Richmond, arrive in the studio and for the first 71 takes struggled to remember what she had done in the car. And the nice thing about this, is throughout her ‘remembering process’ ,’ she entertains us with some choice words and lovely rants. Be she nailed it and added a nice new take on the Chorus and we think we’re ready for a bit of mixin’ and masterin’. Well done!
Then Jimmy pulled an Ed’s Water Trick. Inspired by his childhood love of Shirley Jones (before she became a Patridge Mother and the whole thing went Oedipul), Jimmy wanted to do an Oklahoma Overture for the album – done over My Knees at half speed. Yes, read that sentence again. Not much of it forecasts a good outcome. And it was ugly. Andy tried hard. He create a w0nderful montage on keys. And Rob tried hard. And Ed left early. And we stopped. And the world became a better place.
Then there was Pizza. And we talked about websites and Africa. And then Martyn told a story about a friend who needed a song. And Jimmy dashed out lyrics and Andy dashed out a tune (combined song writing time – 12 minutes). And the band played. And we really like it. Andy on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Martyn on lead guitar, Sophie on cello, Rob and Mike on bass and drums. And we dashed it out in about 2 hours and we think it will go on the album, probably dumping poor Starin’ at My Shoes, which still hasn’t found it’s chorus. We’ll call it Nick’s Song (and later called it Another Day) and we hope he likes it. Who knows where a song comes from? Some stick in the studio for month after month and never see the light of day (poor Shampoo Bottle Armies) and some seem to pop out of nowhere and sort of arrive done (Big Old Bird and Nick’s Song).
Well that’s it. The rest was sunshine.
