Recent Gigs
Written by oliviawallwork
I thought I’d write a little blog so that you can all get to know me a little better – at least in regards to my taste in music! – by telling you about some recent gigs I’ve been to. As Jodie already alluded to in my bio, I am a fan of R’n’B and hip hop music and you can often find me dancing about my room listening to Radio 1Xtra.
Recently, I’ve been to a few gigs up in London. The first being, my absolute girl crush, Rita Ora! Signed to Roc Nation, her debut album Ora is the perfect mix of pop and R’n’B (because although Jodie laughs at me for my ‘ghetto’ taste in music, I still love Britney Spears and Steps!) and her gig at Scala London represented that – her outfit was a bright lime green crop top with matching skirt but her hands and neck were decorated with bling. To me, she is the luckiest girl in the world: Jay-Z as her manager, Beyonce as her ‘big sister’, Drake writing songs for her and Tinie Tempah featuring on her debut single in the UK. Yet she still remains so lovely and cute, crying at the gig when the audience began chanting her name! Oh, and not to mention, she has the most amazing husky voice…
Next up was AZEALIAAAA! After seeing her at Reading and nearly dying in the crush and drowning in the sweat of topless men, her gig at 02 Shepherds Bush Empire was much more my style – Cara Delevingne and Nick Grimshaw were in the audience! Her support act was the CRAZY Zebra Katz featuring Njena Reddd, check out their song Ima Read, which Azealia Banks samples. In terms of her performance, it was awesome – as expected – though over really quick: her set was only about 40 minutes! Here is her performance of 1991… I LOVE her backing dancers…
After that was Radio 1Xtra Live – which definitely lived up to its name, it was LIVE! Such a good gig with five (or should I say four… I’m not really a fan of Tulisa) incredible artists interspersed with sets from radio 1xtra DJs. The other acts were Angel, Wizkid, Kendrick Lamar and Trey Songz, who I am also going to see in January. The best part… It was free!
Most recently, last Monday night, I went to see Big Sean. Had a brilliant night and his set was insane – a mix of his album, Finally Famous, and his mixtape, Detroit. Unfortunately, all of his songs are too explicit to post on here, but the atmosphere was so pumped and everyone was going crazy! Such a good night and if you want to see a little bit, check out this video – terrible quality but captures the ecstatic mood inside the Empire!
So these are a few of my latest musical excursions to a few of my favourite artists’ gigs! I always find that seeing artists live is a completely different experience to just listening (and dancing) to them in your room and end up being some of the most memorable evenings!
