This Week in the Studio: 10.01.30

Slashing seconds, polishing big knees, jammin’ in London, and fighting with flip — another day in the life of the London Studio at Abubilla Music.
The morning started with Andy teaching Jimmy more about mixing. We fixed some vocal timings on Big Old Bird (decided that Louise and Jimmy should roughly be singing the same timing of the verses of ‘flapping our wings together’) and slashed about 50 seconds off of Immovable Thing (which is lovely but too long!). Learned more about reverb and compression.
This was followed by a ‘boy attack’ with Rob, Martyn and Mike all joining for a remake of Big Knees (became Mah Knees). We think we’ve sorted this one and its ready for mixing! As always happens with the boys, between takes they went off into Jammy land, creating a 30 minute track of three new January Jams – now called Doctor My Eyes vibe, My Guitar Gently Weeps vibe and Something Else(called Facebook Party). We’ll turn these into something at some point.
Meanwhile, Louise joined at noon and interviewed Mike as artist of the month using the flip and then struggled for fours to upload the video. Many of our takes were interrupted by some very salty language from the young actress. We erased these from our takes for legal reasons. Louise also told the boys about the video shoot on Monday for Knife Will Come, which sadly did not involve burning as we had hoped, but did have a delicious moment when said actress was forced to push her face into a bowl of water. That’ll do. Also, Andy showed us Her Morning Elegance, which has become our video of the month.
Afternoon was spent struggling with carb coma (due to Too Many Pizzas) doing re-takes of Doctor My Eyes vibe until we felt we had a good structure for a song.
We missed young Ed who is the only one who remembers chords, so we couldn’t revisit other songs.
That’ll do until next week.
