Background to Lyrics for 71 Hours to Monday
Written by Jimmy
Well, this one didn’t go as planned at all. Was meant to be a rip off of the Stones doing Spider to the Fly and you can hear the same lyric structure on the verses – so here’s 71 hours to Monday. Had the tune to verses down and figured I’d do lead vocal in the grovelly, tuneless, tempoless thing I’ve perfected. But by time band had sorted out tune on lyrics it was pretty clear this wasn’t going Spider to the Fly. It was going …. Disco. Goodness. Me out. Louise in.
So we took a sad little office worker song and turned into ‘I Shall Survive.’ I like the line ‘I’m rottin’ in a cublicle in a cublicle graveyard, boxed in an industrial park.’ Also, for you Jim Croce fans, will notice a direct reference to Jim Croce’s Operator . The only time i’ve seen ‘I’ve learned to take it well, only wish my words would just convince myself that it just wasn’t real.’ So we rhymed: ‘Gotta spend it well and convince myself its worth going round again.’ So, here’s to Jim Croce. (One of the long list of small plane crash victims amongst musicians. Others are: Patsy Cline, John Denver, Otis Redding, Glenn Miller, Aaliyah, Ronne Van Vant (Lynyrd Skynrd), The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, Ricky Nelson, Jim Reeves, Ritchie Valens…)
We have also decided to host 71 Hours to Monday parties on Friday’s. Well, actually, we’ve committed to invite each other and our ‘fan’ (you know who you are!) to a 71 Hours to Monday party.. Probably around 4PM on Saturday though so we can get home early and sleep. and we definitely won’t play this song — too loud and makes you… dance. Sheesh.
