Ed’s Water Trick
Written by Jimmy
Ed likes Chords. Ed likes music trivia and is the prime mover of our list fetish (along with Jimmy the Idiot). And Ed likes to ‘wank on the pod’ (the term used by the band when Andy, Ed and Martyn stare for hours at their feet trying to chase the sounds from their guitars by playing with their various pods.) Rob, Jimmy and Louise are fairly certain it all sounds the same and wait patiently for the pod fun to finish. We cut out most of their guitar bits anyway. But I digress.
Ed also fancies himself as a bit of ‘son of Pink Floyd’ and is always searching for the perfect sound to define one of our songs. So, here we were late in the day on Too Many Weddings. The pizza had come and gone and most folks were in a bit of a carb coma (See Saturday Pizza Order and our love for the Papa John’s guy). Everyone is a bit cranky and we’re wrapping up Too Many Weddings with a little count down number — the song was running dangerously close to being short and good and so we very quickly added another 40 seconds of nonsense at end to hit the magic 4.25 moment that seems to define our music (See 4.25)
Then Ed comes up with the brain wave. The amazing moment. The Day in the Life Chord, the Walk on the Wild Side Sax, etc… (See Pattie Boyd). He decided that what the song needed was the sound of water being poured from one steel pan to another. So he goes to Saint Kathy and asks for a variety of pots and pans. She complies. And he fills them up with water. He asks Andy to re-mic 2-3 mics. That takes 30 minutes. Carb Comas set in. He then demands silence and asks Jimmy the Idiot to press his buttons. And we record. And we stare at one another as we listen thru the cams. Someone is concluding Too Many Weddings by weeing into a steel urinal. Strange way to end a song we decide. And we wonder about poor Helen. How can he associate their song, the song we’re going to surprise them with during their ceremony with, well, …weeing.
Needless to say we cut it and promised Ed we would never talk to anyone about this. Ever.
