Love you anyway

Written by

This was a tune inspired by a comment from Helen (at the time my lovely girlfriend, now my even lovelier fiancée).

It was late at night and, as usual I had done something particularly stupid/ inconsiderate/ annoying. Her response was “It’s alright, I love you anyway”. I thought is was a cool little line, so jumped out of bed, grabbed my acoustic and started bashing out chords. And the riff you hear at the start of the song was the first thing that came out. I liked the way the normally bland G chord got turned into an A9.

As for the rest of the lyrics, I took inspiration from the Dylan tune “Queen Jane”. Well, not directly as I don’t really like it that much (sacrilege as it might be for most people, I find Dylan best as backgroud music; good background music, but backgroud music none the less – too many words, too little music. If anyone wants to try and convert me, please send me links to cool Dylan tunes), but from a comment from the bass player of Sleepwalker, my uni band. He likes the tune “Queen Jane” because the way Dylan says he likes a girl is by going through all the horrible things that could happen to her. And I liked that kind of non-saccharine way of putting things, the way of juxtaposing bad and good. And let’s be honest, the phrase “I still love you anyway” is pretty damn saccharine and needs a bit of balancing out!

I recorded a “demo” (though I spent quite a bit of time getting it sounding good) as part of a month off I took to record a whole bunch of tunes of my own, and you can hear that on my soundcloud page.  I originally intended it to be pretty the rocky (as you can hear on the demo), but am really glad Andy and SMCC took it in tthe whole Busted/ McFly/ Beatles vibe of this version.

Peace and love and champagne corks
