Pink champagne, Sparxxx and Norwegian Wood

Written by

One of the great events of the Winter 2009 Spanish Jam was the arrival of the Pink Champagne to celebrate Jimmy’s birthday — bought at a Spanish Petrol Station and aged for the 40 minute drive to villa.  Magical.  Leads to a ‘boys list.’  Songs with Pink Champagne in lyrics and how that leads to Norwegian Wood! These include:  Pink Champagne, Venus Hum; Pink Champagne, Joe  Liggins; Pink Champagne, George Fame/Sam Cooke; Pink Champagne, Buster Poindexter;  and, of course, Hotel California, the Eagles.

Which, of course, raises the question of how many songs have ‘worrying livestock’ in the lyrics.  Scarily there is at least one from a guy Bubba Sparxxx.  And they’re too raunchy to even offer up a link.

Which raises another question, prompted by titling one of our songs An Immovable Thing.   What are great songs where the title is not the obvious phrase from the song but a totally esoteric one (vs. songs where the title doesn’t appear in lyrics)?  My nomination is Norwegian Wood (see below and Louise, click for a listen).  Please offer yours:

I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me…
She showed me her room, isn’t it good Norwegian wood?

She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere,
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn’t a chair.

I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her wine,
We talked until two and then she said: “It’s time for bed”

She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.
I told her I didn’t, and crawled off to sleep in the bath

And when I awoke, I was alone, this bird had flown
So I lit a fire, isn’t it good Norwegian wood.

  1. According to Beatles lore, the lyric “Norwegian Wood” was originally “Knowing she would”. The song is still completely obvious in meaning without the full help of non-mangled lyrics, but adding in the slightly surreal “Norwegian Wood” just makes it that bit cooler.
