Report from the Dark Side of Music: The Jingle Bell Ball
Written by Jimmy
A quick newsflash from the Jingle Bell Ball, held at O2 last night — there is no future in the music industry and life as we know it is over. And that’s just from watching Janet Jackson.
I organised a ‘daddy daughter’ event at O2, getting a box and going to Jingle Bell Ball. This was not my choice — it was Morgan’s. She had been planning this for most of the year. Had 7 dads, a couple mom’s and 15 or so daughters. The only redeeming feature was great rappers who really, really got the crowd going (Dizzee Rascal, Bonkers, and Flo Rida, doing Low). And Jedward are really funny to laugh at, doing Too Much Pressure (sort of). But Janet Jackson, the headline act, was pure lip synching and not very good and most of the rest just had thumping drum machines (and on the big video screens that showed her performing they stetched the lens so she looked slimmer – so an audio-visual con). There’s this group metro station that act like they are Guns & Roses meet Sex Pistols – all tatoos and attitude — and then played Wham Last Christmas. La Roux was there and did In For the Kill, which I like, but her voice was way to shrill after a bit. Alexandra Burke and JLS acquitted themselves well, especially compared to the miming superstars. Backstreet Boys — what is the point of that? I left depressed. My daughter left estatic finding it all perfect and knowing her street cred at school is enhanced. But there ‘s no future for the music – industry. Here’s to DIY and the Gaslight. And Ezio. See next week’s Top 5.
