Song Discovery 3: 09.12.19

Written by

So, this is where we give you songs we like — hopefully weird, bizzare and informative.  Or just naff.

Here we go with Top 5 on Song Discovery this week.   The Theme is about investigating ‘the influences.’  So Hunter and Tory are telling me about some songs they like and I’ll try to look at influences.  We’ll see if it works:

1. Laura Marling, Captain and The Hourglass:  Fantastic beautiful song with a TIC TIC TIC TIC away, which we like.   If you love Laura, you’ll love Suzanne Vega with Tom Diner and Small Blue Thing and Alison Krauss Down to the River to Pray and Michele Shocked Anchorage and Tracy Chapman Fast Car.

2. Paloma Faith, New York:   Tory doesn’t agree, but I think there is some Nelly Furtado in Paloma, but good old Nelly, like:  I’m Like a Bird mixed with Andrew Sisters, Candy Man (Christina Version), and  Patsy Cline with Crazy.   But her Stone Cold Sober has a lot of Janis Joplin Piece of My Heart  and Supremes Love Child meets the Commitments I Never Loved a Man.

3. Artic Monkeys 505:    I know too fast, but it reminds me of Lost Weekend by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions crashes into New Order’s Bizzare love Triangle and Blue Monday.

4. Rachel Furner, Breath In and nice cover of In For the Kill:   Joan Armintrading’s Love and Affection meets Kate Bush’s Running up the Hill (vocals only).

5. Jamie T New England:  Obviously, you start with Billy’s Bragg version of New England, which is derivative of That’s Entertainment .

I’m not too convinced of all the linkages, especially Paloma Faith’s,  but it’s a great way to play around with music (at least for me), linking now to then, kids to Dad.  And Tory wouldn’t let me include Paolo Nutini’s Last Request, because it’s so ‘old.  Oh well.
