Top 5: Week 1

Written by

Here’s this week’s Top 5 list of stuff that some of us find somewhat interesting some of the times.  Have a quick read and do press on the links, as it took some of us a very long time to sort them out:

1. Director with the best focus on Soundtracks and artists:  Jonathan Demme.  Demme directed the cult classic Something Wild, with a great soundtrack including solo tracks of most of the Talking Heads and a nice reggae cover of Wild Thing, sung by Sister Carol.   Something Wild has the Feelies (listen to  Only Life which is my magic dust 1 nomination for best song opening and great male vocal, rivalled by Cold Blooded Old Times by Smog) playing Fame at a High School Reunion — classic (at 3.38 of this clip the music changes and this is the exact moment when movie goes from light to dark – classic Demme).  He also directed Stop Making Sense, with David Byrnes classic Psycho Killer opening.  And he directed Married to the Mob, with an amazing soundtrack of 70’s music.  And  Goodbye Horses is the best song choice for one of the scarriest movie scenes as Buffalo Bill tries on his new ‘skin’ in Silence of the Lambs.  But here are some other Demme gems that appear in his stuff:  FYC Cover of Ever Fallen in Love, Gerry Harrison, Man with a Gun. and Colin Newman, Alone (this video has the scene in Silence of the Lambs where good bye horses plays).

2. The best little clips of amateur musicians, starting

2. Greatest little tiny song closing a movie.  Goes to Juno and AnyOne Else But You.  Man I wish we had written that.

3. Best cameo by an Australian in an American Comedy set in a hospital.  The classic Men at Work Overkill in Scrubs.   Lead Singer is Colin Hay.

4. Leads to best actor/director concerned with introducing young actors in american comedies set in hospital.  This is, of course, Zach Braff.  Garden State soundtrack is pretty cool and features Remy Zero (check out Smile) and The Shins who do some fun things with You Tube videos.  Check out New Slang.

5. Which leads to our final for the week.  Prettiest song by hard rockin’ folks.  The first 60 seconds of Over the Hill and Far Away by the Zep(just stop it fast after first lines), first minute of Tuesday’s Gone by LS), and the winner, all of Naive Melody by the Talking Heads  (see cool version at Union Chapel) and covered, interestingly by the Artic Monkeys

That’s it.  Until Next week…Jimmy

That’s it.  We’ll share these as a band.  Jimmy
