Background on Songs: Sat out the 15th Update

Written by

Andy hates that we are doing this and he feels we’re breaking all known rules of music! But we perservere.  In this months Newsletter, we’re giving members access to a new version of Sat out the 15th.  it is very rough and Andy hasn’t even put down lead vocals — these are his guide vocals.  He never wants us to put anything out that isn’t finished because he is worried you’ll hate the rough stuff and never come back.  So please don’t listen to this if you want polish.  But we thought it was so totally different than our original take, that it would be cool to give you a work in progress.   So here’s what you need to know:

  1. Song is all about Ali and Frazier and makes two points:  a) Number 2’s just fade away and yet had Frazier stood up for the last round of the fight he would have been number 1, because Ali was would have ‘Sat out the 15th’ and b) it is a shame that Ali is viewed as such as Saint and Joe unrecognised for what he did to help Ali during the prison years.  All based on the film Thriller in Manilla and discussed in separate blog.
  2. This was second song done in Abubilla Music, back in stage where it was Jimmy and Andy just learning Pro-tools and doing most intruments thru various computer programmes.    In fact, Jimmy even did a little Wah Wah guitar on the original (the only time he ever had any of his stuff survive the cutting floor).  So we were just adding layer upon layer of computer stuff.
  3. We wanted  a Philly sound. Hard driving drums and bass, hard guitar chords and ‘wah wah.’  You can hear all this in the 2009 outtakes, song number 4.   We all love aspects of the song, but we never felt it was good enough for 2009 CD — just a bit too plodding.
  4. So it was in the vaults.  And then Andy, with his genius heard something in his head the day we had Sophie (cell0) and Mikey (beat box) in the studio.  He got everyone in the studio, with Rob on bass and Mike on bongos and just went back and did Sat Out.  Ed jumped on to guitar and got finally to explore his Pink Floyd side and we ended up with this trippy, trippy thing
  5. Finally, on Saturday morning we brought Lou in studio to reprise some of her backing vocals. Even before poor Andy got a chance to lay down real vocals.  And boom, we think we have the beginning of something.

We don’t want you to download this yet, but do listen to the new version and the one in the 2009 outtakes just to see a journey a song goes on.  We want to share this with you because we find it all so strange.  These songs become little things in our lives and we’re happy to support them on their journey from ‘the studio’ to you.  This one isn’t ready to join you yet, but wanted to send a postcard.
