Background to Our Songs – Cold Light of Day

So, a good few years ago, I had an idea for a lyric while wandering around the charming sea-side resort of Playa de las Americas on the island of Tenerife. Reports that I had imbibed the majority of a bottle of Gordon’s gin (export strength – in the yellow bottle) are wide of the mark, but needless to say I had been to a few of the nightspots in the town, purely for research. Now that the song is complete I may have to check my receipts to see if I have any left I can claim as allowable expenses. Anyhow, I digress.
Fast forward 5 or so years and there I am, in the studio in Spain. It is empty, as the sun is shining, and everyone leaves me with the smell of my red shoes in the studio alone. The recent addition of a few valve amps and a beautiful Les Paul studio to the setup in Spain then had me trying out a few ideas, while singing, mostly too loud and tunelessly over the top of the guitar.
So, I re-found this lyric and the rest of the song followed on in about an hour. This is always a little satisfying. There is always the train of thought that after the original idea is had, the rest follows with hard work and in this case it did, but is not always guaranteed.
We got back to London, and Imogen heard the track and loved it and asked for a shot at it. I’m glad she did as she has done a wonderful job with it. A whole heap more authentic sound than my effort. I added the slide guitar quite late in the proceedings. I think we did a good job, and probably justified all of that research done in 2005 in Tenerife.
