Background to Songs: Another Day

Written by

A quick song for a good cause.  A little Christian Rock.  A little Bryan Adams.  But love the fiddle.

Three things:

  1. Here’s what we wrote about this song when we wrote it:   “And then Martyn told a story about a friend who needed a song.   And Jimmy dashed out lyrics and Andy dashed out a tune (combined song writing time – 12 minutes).  And the band played.  And we really like it.   Andy on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Martyn on lead guitar, Sophie on cello, Rob and Mike on bass and drums.  And we dashed it out in about 2 hours and we think it will go on the album, probably dumping poor Starin’ at My Shoes, which still hasn’t found it’s chorus.  We’ll call it Nick’s Song (and later called it Another Day) and we hope he likes it.  Who knows where a song comes from?  Some stick in the studio for month after month and never see the light of day (poor Shampoo Bottle Armies) and some seem to pop out of nowhere and sort of arrive done (Big Old Bird, No Bells and Nick’s Song).”
  2. We called it Nick’s Song, we called it Sun’s Up and finall we called it Another Day.  The last title was inspired by Steph’s help on the melody for “another day” in outro.   Steph also plays a great fiddle on this, coming in the week after we put the song down to add fiddle and bvox.  First time in the studio and quite an impact.
  3. There’s in Bryan Adams/Christian Rock band somewhere in the studio, mostly when Andy and Jimmy are left alone without adult supervision.  There’s another song called ‘In the Morning,’ born from our first Spanish Jam.  It is so earnest it sells Girl Scout Cookies.  We don’t know what to do with it, but when we go on our 2014 Pastoral tour of the Bible Belt, we’re sure we have a soundtrack.
