Birds Nest Special: Down on a Saturday Night
Written by Andy Patterson
So, in the early days of Abubilla, it would often be that, of a Saturday, I (Andy), would turn up to Abubilla HQ in London, and be presented with a set of lyrics Jimmy had spent the past week writing, and this would provide the starting point for our activities that week.
Well, in the financially dark days of the recent recession, Jimmy wrote the following little ditty about how the recession had effected some members of society to a certain extent, but things are still ok, as these members are still sitting in their ‘Orangery’ (not an easy word to fit into a vocal I hasten to add…) happy as they were before the crash.
So here is Down:
On a different Saturday, there were no lyrics for whatever reason. We were also short on other sounds that week, and so came up with the following ‘My Baby Only Loves Me on a Saturday Night’.. The track makes its world premiere here in the Bird’s Nest, and even this wouldn’t be happening, if it wasn’t for the fact I found the original hand scrawled lyric sheet in the studio a week or two ago.
The track is mainly guitar, handclaps and vocals. Some of the BVs become reminiscent of 50s/60s doo-wop style – which may be influenced by the fact we had listened to some of the Puppini Sisters that day… An inspiration which led us to suggest to Louise when recording BVs for Let Love Shine (The SMCC version) for Six Months of Saturdays…
