Hannah’s Top Five: Sweet, Sweet 16
Written by Hannah
On Friday I turned 16. I had a lovely jubbly day and now I can do lots of bad things that I wasn’t legally allowed to do before (like gambling!!).
As it is such a big step in the teenage spectrum, I knew there must have been lots of songs about being 16, I could already name a few, so I youtubed. I thought I should share with you my top five sweet sixteen songs:
“You’re Sixteen” was written before my parents were thought of! So being sixteen was even important in the 50s and 60s.
This is a cover by ringo starr, I prefer it to the original, although I realised half way through it was a bit creepy?
Maybe that’s just me.
Ringo Starr – You’re Sixteen
Another 60s song, a new york doo-wop group do a great song about it, which was number 2 in 1959! Enjoy.
The Crests – Sixteen Candles
This was actually written by Chuck Berry, he did a great performance of it as well, but I like the beatles version below. The lyrics are about obsessive sixteen year old fans of Rock and Roll. The song talks about one girls birthday and how she begs her mum and dad to let her go to a concert. The song describes what she wears – “tight dresses and lipstick; she’s sporting high heel shoes”. It then goes on to say how “tomorrow morning she’ll be sweet sixteen and back in class again”.
How very appropriate.
The Beatles – Sweet Little Sixteen
This is my favourite one, it’s just the easiest to dance to. Clearly I’m a fan of 60s music!
Neil Sedaka – Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen
Another 60s song, gorgeous like the rest and I can relate to it! Being young is frustrating sometimes, because no one takes you seriously! “She’s only 15” is my worst enemy. But it’s fine, I’m sixteen now and I feel like a young lady.
I’m not a girl, not yet a woman. Don’t click on that link, come to think of it. Awful song.
Sam Cooke – She was Only 16
Now if you liked any of that music, you’ll love Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, check out Paper Castles, or Why Do Fools Fall in Love, incredible doo-wop music.
Hope you all enjoyed/will enjoy your sweet sixteen as much as I did!
