Voices London: 10.03.06 Hunter’s top ten albums of the decade:
Written by Richmond - Hunter
Here’s my Top 10 Albums of the Decade, From Johnny Cash to Babyshambles…
10. American Recordings Vol iii: Solitary Man- Johnny Cash
This beautiful album, recorded soon before his death, highlights all that is great about Johnny Cash. Listen to it purely for the song “Hurt”, the gorgeous heart wrenching song which will leave any Johnny Cash fan blubbering in tears on the floor.
To me this is the Eels at their best, it moves seamlessly and effortlessly from fun to moving, a real masterpiece.
8. Angles – Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip
The rapper/poet Scroobius Pip and his techno partner Dan Le Sac’s debut album is a display of truly masterful writing, the best British hip-hop album in memory.
This is the album which really set the Gorillaz apart from everyone else, every track is a weird and mysterious tour into the world of these animated band members.
The White Stripe’s classic album, if you’ve heard it you know what it is on here, everyone seems to own it and everyone loves it.
5. Grace/Wastelands- Peter Doherty
Pete Doherty’s first solo album is an absolute success, a true display of everything that is great in the Camden music scene at the moment.
Jamie T.’s debut album is already considered a classic, the jazzy, folksy and all round superb Jamie T at his drunken slurring best.
3. Marshall Mathers LP – Eminem
The album which cemented Eminem’s spot on the top of the hip-hop world. This album sounds brilliant, clean and finished, and is a sick and twisted tour into the world of Eminem’s cartoon alter-ego Slim Shady. However in the midst of the cartoonish violence, it still retains an emotional resonance, the songs of “Stan” and “Kim” are both disturbing masterpieces.
2. Favorite Worst Nightmare/ Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not– Arctic Monkeys
Everyone has their favourite Arctic Monkeys album, if i didn’t choose one, believe me, this list would be a lot more full of them. So I have cheated and chosen two, every single track is a glorious fast paced celebration of clever writing and the indie music scene.
1. Shotter’s Nation- Babyshamblesg
This is the album which made me love music. Now looking back at it, it may not be the most refined our best produced album of the decade, but ignoring my mere nostalgia for it, I really do believe that this album influenced and shaped what the London music scene would be like. Featuring some of my favourite tracks of all time, “Lost Art of Murder” the Babyshambles have made a truly gorgeous, and somewhat harrowing album.
Ah Hunter, great choice with Johnny Cash, I love all his stuff, there’s one hilarious song he did called “A Boy Named Sue”. Check it out:
