Immovable Thing: A New SMCC Video

Written by

Hot on the heals of If I Were a Little Birdie, Mah Knees and Monkey Space Camp, we are very proud to deliver our second ClingFilms production – the Video for Immovable Thing.

So here’s a bit more background:

  1. The Video: Features the three performers on the song – Lou on Vocals, Sophie on Cello and Ed on acoustic guitar.    Filmed by Greg of ClingFilms fame on July 24th in the London Studio.    Greg did three separate scenes – one in the front living room (rocking horse), one in the studio itself (headphones!) and one in the back garden.  He focused the final video on the first two set of shots.   Here’s what the team report at the time:  ‘this is what Sophe said about it:  ‘We played a very beautiful song in a back garden filled with Dog Poo, watching the atmospheric planes fly over head, which meant we couldn’t actually hear the track.  But I got thru it with no giggles.’  Ed said the following: ‘My fingers approached the sound barrier as we had to play the song at 1.5 times speed for some video effect.    It is also very hard not to look at the camera and look cool.  And I kept almost falling asleep.  Also the song is really slow in real time now.   Much prefer the faster version.”  Greg said: ‘This really is all about dodging dogs and their poo.  Toby  kept bringing me stones.  Quite a dumb dog really.”  Lou said:  ‘I didn’t really mind the planes but I also thought the poo should have been picked up. Jimmy, over to you…’  Jimmy said:  ‘I thought the poo added a good effect given the song is about constipation.’  Lou, ‘Jimmy that really isn’t funny.’  Sigh.’
  2. The Song: This song had a very similar birth to No Bells, but a very different childhood.   Jimmy wrote lyrics to a Summer 2009 Spanish Song, code named Misery Marmalade.    This happened at 5.30AM, during an Autumn 2009 jam,  when he woke up inspired to write the lyrics, finally, based on a set of numbers.   Originally he called it Time and Distance.    Ed knew the chords immediately, having thought he was doing chords for Big Old Bird, but instead writing new chords for a new song.   Lou then created the melody, singing over Ed’s chords.    All happened relatively quickly… after a long incubation.  But then, we did the Abubilla Music thing and layered and layered and layered and made the song bigger and bigger and bigger.   Until it burst.  Too much.  Finally, we were inspired to re-do the whole thing as a very, very stripped back tune, focused on Lou’s stunning vocals, Sophie’s great cello and Ed’s simple guitar.     If you need more on the song -here’s the full background.
  3. The Joke that Ruined It:   In the studio, someone suggested this would be a great theme song for a certain type of medicine:

Hmmm

That’s It.  Despite this, we do hope you enjoy the song and the video.    We are quite proud.
