King Henry’s Tears…
Written by Jimmy
Some times great music just depends on a little challenge and a lot of sun. We are very proud to introduce you to the latest video from Abubilla Music – KING HENRY’S TEARS. Enjoy.
A Bit More About the Music
Sophie’s and Ed’s friend listens a lot to Misery Marmalade and Other Spanish Jams; he likes the Misery bit. He challenged us to write a song about how the English love to be miserable. So Jimmy took on the first part of the challenge and wrote the following lyrics:
Verse 1
I am happy to be sad. I’m happy to be left in the rain.
Too much sun would drive me mad
Would give me little cause to Complain.
Verse 2
I Take more comfort in a loss
I like a loss because it causes pain
Too much love’s too high a cost
Would give me little cause to Complain…
Chorus
Cleanse my soul with King Henry’s Tears
Walk the walk, with every single wife
Free me thru the crazy King Lear
See the Heavens with each unhappy life.
If there’s a heart to save, save it with tears.
Verse 3
I am happy with our life
I am happy to be made insane
Yell and scream and kick and fight
Gives me a major cause to complain
Chorus
Martyn’s Solo
Chorus
Well, to be honest Jimmy wrote a few different words, but Gus likes going Sarah Palin – Rogue.
Then Ed took over, writing the chords and melody. At one point he actually asked Jimmy for ‘more words’ (none of the band EVER ask Jimmy for more words) but Jimmy wisely told him to go ‘ah oh’ because by this time it was very sunny and Jimmy was sleeping on a lounge chair. We then brought Sophie in for bass given her stunning performance on If I Were A Little Birdie. Mike took on drumming duties – his kit was a Moroccan table and lamp, ping pong bat, shaker and Diet Coke can (he prefers this kit hugely over the electronic drum kit in the studio). Martyn took on harmonica duties, playing for the first time in 11 years. Gus took on vocals, embracing occasionally the actual lyrics of the song. And ‘honk honk’, you’ve got a pop classic delivered to your door step.
A Little Bit on Everything Else
We are in the middle of our fourth Spanish Jam, starting to make the fourth album of Abubilla Music (to be named, but Jimmy’s leaning toward King Henry’s Tears, because he can’t be bothered to think of something else). The first full day in the Studio was Friday, 19 November and the forecast in Spain was for rain. So, of course, it was a beautiful sunny day and none of us could face going into the dark cave of a studio. So Andy set up mics outside and we wrote and recorded King Henry’s Tears.
The video was done by Greg of ClingFilms who has become a treasured asset of Abubilla. We did four takes of the video, but the recording is all one take. Hats off to Gus, Mike and Sophie for their willingness to jump in a not very warm pool. And hats off to Martyn for finishing off two bottles of very good wine and still managing to look unhappy about it. Finally, big kudos to Ed for hitting the camera on his first ping pong shot and keeping his cool to look miserable – despite then bragging about said ping pong shot for rest of day. Greg stayed up a long time to finish video, reminding us all of the major efforts of Hunter in Mah Knees.
We hope you love the video. Watch this space for more on the Autumn Jam, more on the release of the third album, If I Were A Little Birdie, and more on the development of the fourth album, King Henry’s Tears.

Cracker! looks like a ton of fun, and the percussion – now can’t help thinking that an empty Guinness can would have made it sound even better than it did!!
