Newsflash: The Prototype for the Future of Indie Music Production?

Written by

So, there’s this funky little indie music label in the States called Olive Juice, and their founder is one Major Matt Mason. It was one of the first companies we looked at that was a bit like what we were hoping to be and we loved the home-spun, DIY and relaxed nature of it all. I emailed Matt mentioning that we had a song by that title and ‘isn’t it a funny ol’ world that we live in’, and he wrote back saying ‘ha, yes, it certainly is funny’ and ‘good luck’ etc.

AND THEN (WordPress is so clever) I was writing a blog yesterday on…writing blogs, actually, when I saw that we’d been linked to in another WordPress blog. I clicked on it and look what I got:

I was recently contacted by a collective of musicians based out of London called Abubilla Music. They had written a song called Major Matt Mason (not about me) but still kind of a fun coincidence. I really fell in love with the vibe of the whole site. They seem quite organized with a nice newsletter and blog. It made me think that this could be some kind of prototype for the future of Indie Music production/distribution. I haven’t really explored the actual music on the site much. Most of what I’ve checked out seems slightly mainstream for my tastes, but the communal spirit that oozes from this site is incredibly inspiring to me.

I think we can live with ‘mainstream’ if we’re seen as trail-blazers (ooh, which reminds me, I need a blazer – might pop into Zara…)…
