Newsletter: Summer 2010
Written by Louise
Well, it’s all been a bit manic over the last couple of months with us. While the rest of the world’s been on their summer hols, we’ve been launching albums, websites, rockets (ahem); writing songs, contracts, content. Here’s a thorough summary of all that we’ve been up to:
New Mail-Out, Best from the Nest, is Launched!
To keep things simple, our newsletter is now here (isn’t it lovely?!), and we’ll only be sending out the really great bits of news as and when they happen. We don’t want to clog up your inboxes any more than you want them clogged. (We’ve been inspired by The Observer’s Very Short List.)
We really hope you enjoy what we send you. If you have any feedback, please do not hesitate to email us at: info@abubillamusic.com
Greg, from ClingFilms, joins our Partners team 10th August
On the 25th July, Ed, Sophie and I (this is Louise, by the way) traipsed to Casa Abubilla, London branch, to meet this new guy, Greg. He was going to make some videos for us, apparently. It was a Sunday for crying out loud (what is it with these people who have ‘jobs’ during the week?!), and I had already spent 4 hours working in the library – I think we were all looking forward to a very chilled Sunday afternoon. We needn’t have worried, it was very chilled. Perhaps the most chilled out film making I have ever done! What bliss! I think less blissful for poor Ed, who had to learn the fiddly guitar part to ‘Immovable Thing’ at one and a half speed – that’s one and a half times faster than normal, and the guitar part’s already pretty fast. I think his fingers were bleeding by the end of the 14th take…
Check out Greg’s official Partner page on our website right here. We’re so excited about seeing the final cut! To whet your appetite, here’s the song again:

Hunter Allen releases AMAZING video for Mah Knees 3rd August
Some kids spend their summer holidays lying in bed until past midday, only getting up to chat on Facebook or talk about what they could be doing with their friends (Ceci Calf, I am not talking about you, obviously). Not Hunter. When he could have been lazing on a sun lounger in the boiling temperatures of a Spanish summer, Hunter chose to stay up for 48 hours – pretty much solidly – creating this EPIC video for our Misery Marmalade sensation, ‘Mah Knees’ (written by Martyn and Ed, performed by Gus and the SMCC):
Here’s one Hunter made earlier
Gus and his band S.U.N. win the Semi-Finals! 3rd August
Sophie and Mike were there to cheer him on – by all accounts Gus was his usual, charismatic self with a great support team in the shape of his band, S.U.N. Congratulations to all of you! We look forward to seeing you in the finals.

Soph and Mike had some time to kill before the gig:
New Website Launch! 23rd July
An overhaul of our website to mark our wonderful Website Wes becoming a father! Not really, but we were desperate to get the website finished before Wes disappeared to adore his first born. We think the new layout gives a much clearer idea of what we’re about, and organises our hundreds of blogs into some kind of coherent order. And, or course, a massive congratulations to Wes and Su on their beautiful boy, Jesse Burden:
Misery Marmalade and Other Spanish Jams RELEASED! 1st July
We are so excited to have finally released this gorgeous album. Our progress in song writing is almost tangible – this is a huge step up from the first album, even if we do have sentimental ties to the last one. It’s available here on bandcamp, where you can buy it for a fiver, or here on iTunes where you can buy it for £7.99. I know which one I’d go for…

Lew Allen announced as 2010 Scholar 1st July
Following the rip-roaring success of having Lew in Spain, we have decided to grace his blues-bustin’ ass with a full blown scholarship! As well as providing the most glorious blues guitar lines, he was also a major contributor to the writing process and hardly ever left the studio. Truly dedicated to the Abubilla cause, and our wonderful diplomat in Alaska.
So don’t go messing this one around or he’ll fly his 747 into your face!
Summer Spanish Jam 24th – 30th June
What a week. Jam-packed, alcohol fuelled (embarrassingly) and probably the most productive Spanish Jam we’ve had to date. Almost an entire album’s worth written, despite the lack of a drummer and lead male vocalist every morning…

And look how productive Andy and his shoes were with that camera!

And, boy oh boy, were they proud of their new hoodies! Read here to find out just how thrilled Imp was… We have visual evidence:

Imp can barely contain her excitement…
