Pro Tools 9 -the Install
Written by Andy Patterson
So, I took the plunge, paid my £209 and upgraded to ProTools 9.
The upgrade was easy peasy as it happens. I went for the crossgrade from LE, and thus required the serial number from my trusty old MBox 2, which I managed to scribble down before I left the house. It asked for this along with my iLok user account name during the purchase process.
I already had an iLok, and an account, so this wasn’t tricky either.
The Avid store also accepts paypal, so I didn’t even need a debit or credit card.
The main ache was the download time. Waiting for the few hours for the installer was made even worse by my not reading what I was downloading. So, having already got PT8 on my laptop, the upgrade installer would suffice. So I stopped the download manager and started again. The Avid download manager doesn’t seem to provide any advantage over using Firefox’s own download manager, so I went for that instead.
So, two hours later, I have the installer. The install procedure was painless, as was the transfer of the license to my ilok. As soon as I had clicked purchase, the asset was in my account.
So, here I am, happily sat listening to sessions of the Autumn Jam, on my laptop, with Pro Tools fired up and my headphones plugged into the Laptop headphone socket.
I quickly tested the use of the internal mic for recording and this does what it should as well.
First impressions are that it sounds a lot better than the previous version, which, if they have redesigned the audio engine entirely could be possible. The timing sounds better and the automatic delay compensation is going to save me hours of putting in Time Adjuster plugins..
The new icon is quite cool as well. All in all, I think £209 well spent.
I’ll blog more on it as I get more into the software and what it can offer.
