I’m Hunter – Jimmy’s son and he’s been hastling me to add some song discoveries.   So rather than do an essay on ‘whether the Great Gabsy is Great?’ or on ‘the role of Piedmontisation in the unification of Italy’, I’ll go on You Tube to find good songs…(much better than the stuff Dad ‘discovers’ (mostly things with 10.2 m you tube hits, so not exactly new)…

1.Babyshambles : The band which really put Pete Doherty on the map, far softer than the Libertines before, and it still holds strong as the best of London music at the moment. Lost Art of Murder  DeliveryKillamangiro

2.Jamie T: The folk singer rapper with a music which mixes Joe Strummer, Radiohead and  the drunken slurrs of the punk movement, these three songs really show the varied sounds which Jamie T can produce. Emily’s HeartThe Dance of the Young Professionals – Rawhide (feat. Lily Allen) –

3. Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip: Scroobius Pip is the savior of british hip-hop, the jazz poet who moved swiftly into the world of techno in 2006. The Beat That My Heart Skipped – The Magician’s Assistant –

4.Leonard Cohen: The legend himself, enough said Dance Me To The End of Love – The Stranger Song

5..Arctic Monkeys: These three songs come from one of the greatest albums of the decade, highlighting their ability to create poetry for the new London generation.  Red Lights Indicates Doors Are Secured – Mardy bum – Riot Van

6.Kieran Leonard: An up and coming artist who we will undoubtebly be hearing a lot more about in years to come, a mixture of folk, blues, grunge and punk.  Jerusalem – Song for the Doomed –

7. Dirty Pretty Things: Carl Barat headlines the band which shaped the sound of London.  Gin and Milk – Tired of England

8. Manic Street Preachers: From their disturbing 90s album “Holy Bible”, before the slipped into mainstream.  Intense Humming of Evil – She is Suffering

9. The View: The Scottish indie band’s second album showed a growth in maturity and style. Gem of a Bird – Glass Smash

10. Neil Young: The man who started to make the conversion from folk to grunge, two of his best.  Heart of Gold – Rocking in the Free World –

11. The Kinks: Apeman – Sunny AfternoonSupersonic Rocket ship

12. Gorillaz:  Stop the Dams –   The Swagga– Spitting out the Demons

13. MIA: Sunshowers–  Mango Pickle Down  River–

14. Kid Acne: Eddy FreshWorst Luck–

15. The Libertine: Can’t stand Me Now – Mayday –  Champaign of Hate–

16. Various Artists: Subterranean Homesick Blues (Remix)- Bob Dylan (feat. Melophonic). Honest– Band of Skulls. Rabbit Run– Eminem. Seventeen– Marina and the Diamonds. A Thing for Me– Metronomy. Ghost Mountain– The Unicorns. The Night is the Day is the Night– Beulah

So that’s it.  the top 16.  I’ll find one more eventually to hit 17.
