Song Discovery: 10.02.11 Free Nelson Mandela

20 years ago Nelson Mandela walked out of prison after 27 years to become President of South Africa. The song Free Nelson Mandela, written in 1984 was influential in solidying world opinion against the Apartheid regime, especially in UK and US. But it was also hugely popular in Africa. The song was re-done by Amy Winehouse for Mandela’s 90th B-Day and she was awful. But Geraldine (Peter Kay) redeemed it with her X-factor melody, blending it between Born Free and Umbrella (minute 1.29) .
