This Week in the Studio: 10.12.30
Written by Jimmy
We end the year with yet another artist, four new songs and the beginning of something quite good we think.
The Music
- Michael, Mike Park, Rob and Andy all in attendance. We’ve introduced Michael as our latest artist. He’s a young guitarist with a voice/style between Kurt Wagner (Lambchop), William Oldham (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy) and Brad Roberts (Crash Test Dummies). Given these are all in Jimmy’s top 10 singer-song writers, Michael was welcome in the studio (See Below for Jimmy’s Favourite Songs of the three)
- Michael performed four songs: Birch, Millbank, Rain and Sky, all of which we’ll produce as Band and unplugged versions. We’ll work on his titles. : ) A little too short for Abubilla standards – remember this is the band that gave you Brad and Janet’s Oldest Daugher Frankie.
- We freaked out Michael a bit by introducing the surdo a bit too early intro our relationship. Poor guy was going for an unplugged version of Sky and we insisted on a drum that looks like a communication satelitte. we recovered by back pedaling…. a lot!
Everything Else
Not much else happened to be honest. We were quiet, professional and got the job done. Even ordered pizza with our new business credit cards. So that’s kind of it, which gives me a chance to play three of my favourite songs from the artists referred to above. Each with fantastic subtle, quiet male vocal followed by amazing bvox over the choruss. Michael will be as good, backed by Lou or Charlotte or Imogen or …. Watch this space!
1. Life’s Little Tragedy by Lampchop (Kurt): listen to ‘shame on me, shame on you’
2. Nomadic Revelry by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (William): listen to ‘all around’:
3. Superman’s Song by Crash Test Dummies (Brad) : (Listen to second half!)
