Bill Watterson and Calvin and Hobbes

Written by

Kathy and I had the pleasure to go the same college at the inventor of the greatest cartoon strip of all time – Calvin and Hobbes.  If you haven’t discovered it, start now.  5 points:

1.  Watterson went to Kenyon College and was the cartoonist for our school paper.  He was a year ahead andwhen he left he sold off the originals of his strips.  I bought one and have lost it!  Crap. Crap.  Here’s the kind of stuff he was doing then:

2. My sophmore year, we lived in Caples.   I was in a Suite with six friends and Bill was on the same floor in a double.  We never saw him, but most Mondays there would be 2-3 empty bottles of booze outside his door waiting for pick up.  So we figured he was having a good time.

3. He was a political philosophy major – thus Calvin, thus Hobbes.   I was a political philosophy major.  Some time I call the Swiss Bone Guitar ‘Aristotle.’

4. Here’s one of my favourite strips…
