Midomo Water Purifers

Written by

We are always interested to hear about initiatives and programmes which are supporting people in developing countries and in particular in East Africa where the Singing Wells project is operating. Here is one we absolutely love. It’s the Midomo – a simple and effective 3-in-1 water carrier, purifier and storage unit.  Designed and developed by Red Button Design who pitched the prototype for the Midomo in the Dragon’s Den back in 2007, the Midomo is now changing people’s lives in Mwingi, Kenya. Using the Midomo, one person can collect and easily transport 50 litres of water from any water source and by the time they have rolled the Midomo home that water has been filtered and purified and is ready to drink. When you see the Midomo in action, you realise how quickly it can change the lives of people living in communities that do not have ready access to clean water.  Take a look at this video which tells the whole story.

As well as designing a great product which solves a humanitarian need, Red Button have also developed an ingenious way of promoting the Midomo and funding its distribution into communities where it’s needed most.  They have commissioned the ‘Midomo bracelet’ from British jewellery designer Alex Monroe – a unique sterling silver and blue topaz charm bracelet.  Here it is:

When you buy the bracelet one Midomo unit is delivered to a community in Africa and you then can track where your Midomo is being used with the unique code engraved on one of your bracelet’s silver charms.

Simply brilliant.

The Midomo bracelet costs £275 which is a small price to pay when you know that it could save lives.

You can buy the Midomo bracelet and track the whereabouts of your Midomo water purifier in Africa here:  Midomo bracelet initiative

As you can tell, the team at Abubilla Music love the Midomo initiative and we recently bought one of the bracelets so that we can see our own Midomo water purifier delivered to Mwingi in Kenya.

But we want all our friends, and friends of friends, to hear about Midomo so we’ve decided to give away our bracelet to one of our Abubilla Music newsletter readers in October.  If you’re not already a subscriber just click here and enter your email address at the bottom of the page.  On 31st October we will randomly pick the name of one of our readers and send them their very own Midomo bracelet.

Good luck and thanks for helping to change people’s lives in Africa.
