This Week in the Studio: 01.01.29
Written by Jimmy
Alright, I was grumpy so really didn’t enjoy the studio that much on Saturday. But I got to watch Gus cry which was really quite a lot of fun.
The Music
Our day was divided in two halves – continue work on Michael’s Discovery 2 EP, while re-working some of Gus’s Discovery 1 EP (which was actually release on Thursday night at the Flat Planet launch). We mixed in a bit of Saved and called it a day. But too much little twiddling for my liking and way too much tuning and re-tuning. So I got crumpy.
- We started with a quick video clip of Michael doing Millbank live, so we could get a video out there.
- We then worked on Hotel in the Sky to get some Martyn riffs in and a good Michael Guitar Solo.
- We then started on a new Michael Song called ‘Dirt‘ (keeping the one word, elements theme) which had him on Piano. All fun.
- We then worked on a lot of Cello with Sophie for Saved, laying down three separate cello tracks
- Gus arrived and we did new vocals AGAIN for One Way Home
- We also did a new version of Walking, which was one of Gus’s first recordings with us, but we forgot all about. He did it at his Thursday night launch party and we loved it, so forced him to do a band version.
Everything Else
- Gus cried more than the Cowardly Lion in Wizard of Oz. Well, he poured the last of the ‘chili flavoured olive oil’ all over his pizza, not knowing that the last inch or so is all chili, all the time. And then he add the pizza. Crying with each bite. But he add the pizza. The whole thing. That was the funny part.
- Martyn was really, really happy. His wife and kids were up in Ireland. This was his first studio day in 2 years that didn’t compete at front or back end with all those girls. He was the bands. Really. Just ours. It didn’t make his amp any better but he smiled. A lot.
- Jimmy was really, really grumpy. It mostly has to do with the quite correct rule that we start all songs tuned to the piano (funny it took us a year to do that!). But, the Les Paul is new AND it goes out of tune in seven seconds. And Martyn tunes to a little tuner machine and Sophie won’t let him (it is all about the math she says ??????). And gus tunes with a capo on. And it goes on and on. So basically Jimmy sits there for about 7 and 1/2 hours while they tune, and tune and tune and tune. Oh and we had about 40 minutes on congas in, congas out, bongos in, bongos out, drums in, drums out, congas in again, or congas out again. Lots of druming. Mike gets paid by the beat.
That’s it. Not my favourite day. But hey.

The tuning issue is all about logarithms! And it’s not just me, this is an extract from a website called Dr Math, and with a name like that he MUST know what he’s talking about…
“Each piano key participates in a number of different chords, and it turns
out that the key would have to be tuned slightly differently for each
chord. Around the time of Bach, there was a lot of debate about this,
and it was decided to go with a compromise called “equal tempering”
that has each note a little bit off from what it should be, so that
each chord will sound okay, though none is perfect.”

At the risk of banging on about this, here’s another website…
“if one forces it with electronic tuning, the instrument sounds very unmusical…”
