This Week in the Studio: 11.03.06

Michael does a better job than Jimmy on the ‘overture’;  Jimmy reaches an incompetence milestone.    Charlie Sheen amuses us over Pizza while Hannah and Andy deliver the goods.The Music: A full house, focusing on Michael’s Discovery Album.   But he seemed to get distracted with school work of some sorts, so Jimmy and Andy stepped in with ‘Footprints.’

1. Jimmy and Andy focus on Footprints:    As Jimmy mentioned in his musical journey blog, he spent Friday trying to write a song directly on the guitar.  Worked well for the verses, which essentially became an inventory of every chord Jimmy knows (regardless of the ‘key’).  But he struggled with the chorus, which he could sing, but couldn’t find it on the guitar.  He found the ‘C’, but the chorus went somewhere and then had a G.  But it went somewhere mysterious.   So Jimmy and Andy Skyped on Friday and Jimmy sang the chorus, plus showed the rest of the song to Andy.   And would you know it?   Jimmy, the idiot, had come up with a melody that went right from C to F.  The ‘F’ chord!  The stupid, impossible, angst-filled F chord.    I’ve boycotted the F Chord, but blundered right into it.   Andy then came early to the studio on the Saturday and we sorted the song out very quickly – the lyrics and music actually fit because Jimmy had written it on the guitar.   We then brought the whole band it and put it down for most of the afternoon.  Hats off to Andy for a great guitar and vocal and to Hannah for some great backing vocals.
2. Michael’s Overture:  At one ‘low point’ in Abubilla History, Jimmy the Idiot (see above), thought it would be fun to create an ‘overture’ for the album.    This lead to poor Andy and Ed working for four hours or so trying to create a single medley of our songs.    They did the best they could, but it was a terrible idea.   Well, young Michael, preparing for his Discovery album decided he wanted an intro and outro that put together his best riffs from his Discovery songs.   This kept Michael and Andy busy for a couple hours looping in various riffs.  Even Sophie go in on the act, throwing in her Cello riffs from Millbank.     Good enough and let the rest of us watch Charlie Sheen videos.

Everything Else:

1. Charlie Sheen.    Sadly, this was the week Mr. Sheen was going on his ‘rants’ – so, of course, we spent part of our pizza break watching all his madness.
2. Back to the Future: We also enjoyed looking thru the  spectacular pictures from  ‘Back to the Future’ from photographer Irina Werning (recommended by VSL). We’ve posted a couple, so click on the link to see the full list.
