18 February, Ollie the Cow and Monkey Space Camp

You can’t make this up. On this day, in 1930, the first cow flew in a fixed wing aircraft. Ollie the Cow, which is rather unusal naming. And yes, she was milked in air, also a first. The ‘announced reason’ was to investigate the impact that high altitude flights had on living organisms. We’re pretty sure that Ollie, a Guernsey lass, just wanted to join the mile high club. Ollie was not alone in all this animal testing and it probably reached its peak during the Monkey Space Race in the late 1950’s, immortalised in this largely forgotten, but classic, Abubilla Track:
