Amsterdam…ish

Written by

Hey it’s Jodie, I’m new here working at Abubilla and am writing for our Amsterdam Voice. Thought I’d start with this song by Peter Bjorn and John who are actually from Sweden but is an outside look at Amsterdam. The band formed in 1999 in Stockholm. The song was previously mentioned in a blog from the Voice of Stockholm.

The band base their music on 60’s baroque, power pop and new wave. The song sums up the atmosphere of Amsterdam

But still I was way, way out of line

Amsterdam was stuck in my mind

This is a cool song which is really chilled and definitely makes me wanna go see this city! Anyway, onto  current Amsterdam music, I’ve discovered Rachel Sermanni … who played in Amsterdam on 24th November. Okay..this kind of isn’t about Dutch music HOWEVER she sounds really cool so have a listen.

Rachel is scottish and her lyrics are based on Robert Burns’ poetry and are perfectly compiled to make these beautiful songs. Amsterdam are lucky to have her play there! Think Ren Harvieu and an even softer and sweeter version of Lucy Rose. Sermanni had a new album out this year, ‘Under Mountains.’ I am currently listening to it and liking it. It’s really easy simple acoustic music, you’ve got to love it! Harmless lyrics and guitar, songs like this make you close your eyes and listen.

After a first listen my favourites are

Song for a Fox

Ever Since the Chocolate

Marshmallow Unicorn (cos i like the name) … the song is cool too
