Britian’s best female song-writer? Cathy Dennis or Tati….

Written by

Cathy Dennis was born today in 1969.   I never heard of her but shame on me.    She was discovered by Simon Fuller’s management company at 17 and had a modest career as a performer in the early 1990’s, with dance songs like, Too Many Walls.    I will confess, I’m no big fan of those songs.  But, she then went on to have the most extraordinary song-writing career and is probably Britian’s greatest female song-writer.  There’s a very long list of singles (click here), but here are a few to give you an idea:  I Can Get you Out of My Head (Kylie), I Kissed a Girl, Katy Perry), Jealousy (Will Young), Toxix (Britney), Never Had a Dream Come True  and Reach(S CLub 7), etc…  Can’t say I love any of this, but you have to be pretty impressed with her track record.   She’s had 8 UK # 1’s and a tone of awards (Click here).    Despite all this, she wasn’t even mentioned in the top 50 of the Telegraph’s 50 Best British Song-writers.

Which brings me to my point… She wouldn’t make my list of top 50 songwriters, but there’s another female artist that would.   Our own Tati and here’s three reasons why:

1. My favourite, Wodwo:

2. Everyone else’s favourite, B.I.G. Breasts:

3.   A Girl Like You:

Three wonderful examples of great song writing.  So hats off to Cathy for writing all those hits.  And a little nod to Tati, for writing the beautiful songs.
