Dara, Driving and Me

Written by

Learning to drive is not something that’s coming to me particularly easily. For example, last Saturday I stalled the car 16 times in 40 minutes, consistently used the windscreen wipers instead of the indicators, confused the gas pedal and the brake, forgot that in England we drive on the left, and failed to realise that when pulling out into the road one needs neither extreme acceleration nor a full 90ᵒ turn, thus landing myself neatly on the opposite pavement rather than in the middle of the road as I had hoped.

With all this going on, I’m grateful that I was able to see this enlightening bit of stand up from Dara O’Brien before I took up driving (if I can honestly call it that, which I don’t think I can). I may still have the seventeen-year-old’s problem of pushing all buttons, pulling all levers and pressing all pedals in the event of a stall, but at least I know what to do when those North London mothers in their St. John’s Wood tractors (like a Chelsea tractor but shinier) start honking me.
