Live Your Life Like Somebody Left the Gate Open

I really enjoyed this picture and it motivated to give my energy speech.  Forgive me.

So here’s the speech:

  • In every conversation I’ve had with leaders, the theme of energy comes up.   They talk about battling a world of complexity, where the number 1 job of the leader is to simplify things.   But that takes a massive amount of energy.   Tired leaders make things more complicated.   And fail as leaders.
  • This has become such a big deal that leaders now tell you, often confidentially or with a slight bit of embarrassment that they work hard to surround themselves with energy givers and try hard to rid themselves of “energy vampire”, those that suck energy out of every interaction.   It is easy to reality check this:  you all know the person on your mobile phone that when their names pop up on your phone you have to take a deep breath and decide if you have the energy to take the call.  These are the vampires – and I can pretty much guarantee that they will be out of your live soon.
  • So the simple lesson is:  always be the one with a reputation to bring energy into every interaction – live your life like someone left the gate open.   Folks will forgive a lot incompetency if you give energy – you better be a Nobel Prize winner if you are a Energy Vampire.
  • Oh and one final thing.   Everyone has something on the front of their T Shirt.    It is every thing positive about you that every tells you all the time.  It is visible even to you.  Everyone also has something on the back of the T Shirt.  It is the phrase that is often used when decision are made to hire you, promote you and/or decide your bonus.    The problem with the back of the T Shirt is everyone can read it but you.   And performance review systems are often not honest enough to tell you what’s REALLY on the back.  Your job is to seek it out.
  • The thing you must have on the front of your T Shirt is – gives energy.   If you have Energy Vampire on the back, you’re doomed.

That’s the speech.  Live your life like somebody left the gate open.
