Mary Chapin Carpenter – Ashes and Roses

Written by

So, as anyone who knows me will be able to testify, I am a secret fan of country music. It is a guilty pleasure. On a recent trip to the States, I got ridiculously excited about a country music station in California…. Also, some of it has sneaked into the Abubilla catalogue  – with Chamberlain in Munich taking the brunt of the influence:

In May, I was driving home from another day at the coal face when I heard a snippet of a song on Radio 2. I think it was Bob Harris’ show, but I know for certain it was James Taylor singing along with a female.. which led me to spending some time with Google to discover it was Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the song – Soul Companion, from her new album Ashes and Roses.

The album is fulled with other treats and delights, but the next best song after Soul Companion is Jericho:

The album is well worth a listen, as sound wise, it is great. There are a few moments where it feels to me as if the vocals have been tuned to within an inch of their lives.. which is fashionable at the minute, if not to my own taste. Overall though, it is highly recommended by these ears. I’m sure I’ll now be spending the next few weeks going back through her catalogue to see what else there is to discover.
