Personal Fest

Written by

With no posts in this blog, Buenos Aires is not getting very well represented on our Voices map so I am writing in place of Agustin to let you know about a music festival coming up here at the beginning of Decemeber.

But before I start on that, I should probably explain that ‘I’ is Olivia, the new assistant here at Abubilla. My first task: to help update the Voices. So, it’s not only Argentina’s first blog, but mine, too! I must admit, I am not too knowledgeable about music in Argentina – but after a search, I came across the Personal Fest which is on the 1st and 2nd of December this year.

It began in 2004, with acts such as Blondie and The Petshop Boys performing alongside locals such as Gustavo Cerati and has continued to be an eclectic mix of rock, indie, alternative, reggae and Latin American music ever since. Over the years, a vast array of acts have graced the Personal Stage, from Snoop Dogg (sorry, Snoop Lion) to Simple Minds, Bloc Party to Black Eyed Peas and CocoRosie to Catupecu Machu.

This year, Kings of Leon headline the 1st day and Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas close the festival on the 2nd of December. Illya Kuryaki formed almost two decades ago but split in 2001 and pursued solo careers. They reformed again in 2011, and released their latest album Chances in October this year. Their song Ula Ula is high energy and slightly crazy – the video is a mash of hula girls, 1950s dancing and gymnastics – with lyrics that translate to ‘your imagination run as an airship/Which presidents are smart/I make the oldies will grow teeth’ (but do bare in mind that this is using google translate) It is clear to see why this duo are  a popular act – an Argentinian version of the Scissor Sisters, at least asthetically – because they just seem so fun.
