The Rolling Stones and Advertising….
Written by Jimmy
Continuing my read of True Adventures of the Rolling Stones and enjoyed reading the little tid bit that Brian Jones wrote a jingle for, and the Rolling Stones played for, a commercial for Rice Krispies in 1964 – making more for the one ad then the had made to date doing life gigs. Well, with that, you just gotta sit back and enjoy:
Makes you think a little differently about all the protesting against advertising in Satisfaction: When I’m watchin’ my TV And that man comes on to tell me, How white my shirts can be, But he can’t be a man ’cause he doesn’t smoke, The same cigarrettes as me, I can’t get no, oh no no no …Hey hey hey, that’s what I say … I can’t get no satisfaction”, Bless.
Cracked.com does a nice little piece on the top 10 regrettable commercials by celebrities: click here. But are there any good Rock Star moments as embarrassing as this one? There’s a separate blog on top 10 ‘sell outs’ but this includes politics and general abandonment of musical roots: click here. Dylan selling out to Cadillac comes closest in my book, but other comments welcome. Three reasons this is really bad compared to the Stones:
1. The Stones really needed the money. Early in careers.
2. Brian Jones took the decision and he was off his head most of the time.
3. Rice Krispies are really cool. Cadillac, not so much.
Enjoy:
