The United States of America

Written by

I have just returned from my first trip to America. The U S of A. It was a great trip that took in 4 statesĀ  – 2 national parks and a few major cities.

So – here are my early observations from the trip:

Food
For a country that puts cheese on most food items – you’d think that they’d make better cheese – most of it is colours that cheese should not be, and tastes of, oddly, nothing.

Beer
Surprisingly good. I say surprisingly, as the major brands that make it to the UK market – ie Budweiser and Coors, are generally very low down on my list of choices when looking for refreshment. Samuel Adams do a good pint. I also had an interesting pint of ‘red lager’ in Death Valley.

Granny Smith ‘Hard Cider’
Also very good. – our resident expert on all things US – Jimmy tells me that it is called Hard cider as they have another drink, which originated in New England, which is called ‘Apple Cider’ which is fermented but not alcoholic.

Satellite Radio
Is an essential when driving through Death Valley. If in California, try 100.7FM http://www.khay.com/

Country Music
Is king. I’ve reported this before. My best discovery on this trip was via the aforementioned Satellite radio. It is the song – People are Crazy, which the internet tells me is by Billy Currington:

The song includes the line ‘God is Great, Beer is good and People are Crazy.

More to come soon, including a ‘Geordie’s guide to Las Vegas’ and how to do New York in a day (although we took 4 days to do it) – also TV advertising, which seems to do everything possible to disrupt the flow of entertainment that the TV shows try to offer.
