#YOLO

Written by

As I’m English (excuse) and seem to miss most current popular culture (truth), I was blithely unaware of the YOLO phenomenon until I heard a bunch of Stanford students saying it – naturally I assumed it was the name of a dorm building or a society or something.  However Urban Dictionary, always my saviour in these situations, informed me that YOLO is “An acronym for You Only Live Once. Mainly used to defend doing something ranging from mild to extreme stupidity.”

The phrase was immortalised, sort of, by Drake, in the song The Motto, and it’s now so widely used it’s even tattooed on Zac Efron’s hand.

I could take the time to explain all the reasons that #YOLO is irritating as hell but instead I’m going to defer to a friend who’s already done so in a far more amusing way than I could… also she swears a bunch and I don’t think I’m allowed to do that here.  Click through to hear from Lexi, who isn’t just American but also Californian and listens to rap music while she drives with the windows down, so is well qualified to talk about this stuff.  After all, YOLO, right?
