Brit Nominations
Written by oliviawallwork
Brit Nominations for this year’s awards were announced on Friday January 10th! As I was reading through the nominees, I realised Alt-J’s name came up quite a few times, as they were nominated for British Breakthrough Act (along with Ben Howard, Jake Bugg, Jessie Ware and Rita Ora), British Group and British Album. I had never listened to this group – even though I’d heard their name here and there throughout 2012 – because their name was Alt-J… i.e. the triangle (or Greek letter delta) on a Mac. Maybe it was because I have Mac envy or I just thought naming your band Alt-J was a little too ‘indie’ for me… HOWEVER, I have now seen the error of my ways: you cannot judge a book by its cover or, in this case, a band by its name (however silly you may think it).
I am probably like a whole year late, but just in case there are a few out there who, like me, hadn’t heard Alt-J, take a listen to their (Brit nominated) album, An Awesome Wave. It’s a super cool album with a quite trip-hoppy-rocky vibe! I really like it!
Another award which I am always interested in is the Critic’s Choice Award, which this year has been awarded to Tom Odell, a singer/songwriter from Chichester. Really emotional, powerful music – his single Another Love, was used by the BBC on one of their adverts, so you may recognise it!
The Brits seemed to have really championed new, alternative artists this year: showcasing how amazing British music is!
