Feeling like a tourist…
Written by oliviawallwork
On Easter Sunday in Barcelona we had booked tickets to see flamenco at the Palau de la Musica, an incredible Art Noveau building, and I was feeling very cultural…
I loved the show; just three dancers, two guitar players and three singers. That video doesn’t really do it justice but you get the idea… Anyway, I was happily watching, totally taken in by the traditional and improvised style and came out inspired and appreciating the Catalonia culture… Or so I thought…
The next day, a taxi driver completely crushed my dreams. After telling him (in Spanish might I add) that last night we went to see a Flamenco show, he told me that the shows were only for tourists, that no Barcelonians ever went to see it and that it wasn’t even a traditional Catalonian dance! I might be exposing my lack of cultural awareness here…
Essentially, I left feeling completely duped and very much like a tourist…
