Joni and Graham and Love Songs…for Valentines Day…

Written by

Just finished watching a wonderful video about Joni Mitchell, filled with wonderful Joni quotes and anecdotes.  My two favourite quotes:

  • Blue:  When describing how Blue was one of her best albums, but also represented a terrible time for her personally, “But depression is often the sand the gives the pearl to the oyster.”
  • Her Musical Diversity:  When describing the frustrations of her record label as she moved from folk’s golden haired goddess, to jazz and rock musician, she says, “The reason I’m so unruly in this business is I’ve refused to be a human jukebox.”

Did I tell you I loved Joni.  The other interesting thing I never knew was that she missed Woodstock because she had an interviewed scheduled on the Dick Cavett Show.  But, she had been hanging out with Crosby Stills Nash and Young and somehow they made it and still managed, via a helicopter, to get back from Woodstock in time to crash Joni’s interview.  She quietly got her revenge by writing the song Woodstock while watching it on TV – she played it on the Dick Cavett show the next day.  David Crosby lamented – “Damn Joni.  She wasn’t even there and managed to capture the moment, spirit and essence of the concert better than anyone.  She’s become its sound track and she wasn’t even there!”  You know the song:

But its Valentine’s Day and that’s not the point of this blog.   Graham Nash and Joni dated for a while and we got a number of fantastic love songs out of that relationship.   I felt it was worth sharing two of these for all you lovers on Valentines Day:

  •  Joni to Graham:  My Old Man:

  • Graham to Joni:  Our House:

Happy Valentine’s Day!
