St. Patrick’s Day
Written by oliviawallwork
As I am a 1/8th (or maybe 1/16th… the family tree is a bit hazy!) Irish, I thought I’d better get in touch with my ancestral roots and learn a little more about St. Patrick’s day…
Firstly, St. Patrick isn’t actually Irish… He was born in either very Northern England or Scotland in around 390AD, to a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a deacon and his grandfather was a priest in the Christian Church. He was then captured by the Irish and taken as a slave, where he turned to God. He escaped captivity and returned to his family, where he was ordained as a Bishop. He returned to Ireland and converted many Irish – who were Druids and pagans – over 40 years. He is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, with the use of a Shamrock, as he used it to explain the Holy Trinity!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
