To listen to in 2013… VIII
Written by oliviawallwork
It’s been a while that I’ve posted in the ‘To listen to in 2013’ series, but I guess I haven’t come across anyone that I’ve felt inspired enough by to write about! BUT, no fear, for Lorde has finally showed up on my radar…
I heard her on trusty Fearne Cotton’s radio show the other week, but it has taken me a while to really hit google and youtube and listen to this girl’s stuff!
Real name Ella Yelich O’Connor, this 16-year old New Zealander has achieved number 1 spot in New Zealand for her debut single Royals and Tennis Courts, which was played during the BBC coverage of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships Ladies Final. Clearly, she is on the way to something good and, with the release of her album Pure Heroin on October 28th in the UK, things can only get better.
She cites her mother as an influence
“I started writing songs when I was 13 or 14, because I’ve always been a huge reader. My mum’s a poet and we’ve always had so many books, and that’s always been a big thing for me, arguably more so than music.”
Which I think is a key reason this youngster is so popular, as her lyrics are (thankfully) void of those phrases often found in the songs of artists under the age of 18, or at all related to Disney.
And although only 16 – which, as this youtuber points out, meant she couldn’t actually have bought a ticket to her show in London – she seems to have a stage presence that is wise beyond her years.
Hopefully with the release of her debut album, Lorde will gain the recognition she deserves in the UK that she has been getting elsewhere!
