Mafikizolo are back
Written by oliviawallwork
South African duo Mafikizolo, which consists of singers Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza, recently made a comeback with their album ‘Reunited which was released in late 2013.
The new album combines themes of ‘afro pop, kwela and marabi’ to create an refreshing blend of sounds. Marabi and kwela are different types of township music that originated in the 1920’s and incorporate instruments such as the guitar, piano and drums to create rhythmical melodies.
Their first single ‘Khona’ peaked at no.1 in South Africa, and received a lot of radio play across Africa. It has elements of western music fused together with traditional South African beats.
However the video sparked some controversy due to the men dressed in gold that were dancing, many viewers perceived it as showcasing homosexuality. This wasn’t well received in a continent where homosexuality is banned in the majority of countries.
Check it out below and have a look at their website for updates, pictures and to find out some more about them!
