Countryphobe
Written by oliviawallwork
Like most of the rest of the UK, I do not classify myself as a country music fan. It took me a while to even become accustomed to Taylor Swift and, even to this day, my favourite song of hers is Trouble – which is really more dubstep (!) than country.
But on Saturday morning I was watching BBC Breakfast and Kacey Musgraves was on for an interview. Before she appeared, they played the video for Merry Go Round, from her album Same Trailer, Different Park and I fell in love…
And so has the rest of America – as Same Trailer, Different Park has reached number 2 on the US album chart and Undermine was used in the popular US TV show Nashville.
But as the presenters on the BBC Breakfast show asked, Why do country artists not receive the same reception as they do in the UK? I guess it is less relatable the UK pop… But I think Kacey’s lyrics which observe and poke fun at ‘small towns’ in the US will give her the recognition she deserves here…
I think I might be getting over my fear of Country music…
