The (very) Great Gatbsy
Written by oliviawallwork
Saw it last night – and I won’t give anything away for those who haven’t seen it yet, but say what you like… The soundtrack is amazing.
Sadly, Amy’s father Mitch has called it a ‘terrible’ cover but Mark Ronson, who originally produced the track has said ‘I’m flattered and honoured. I know Amy would be too.’ I also am a massive fan (did you expect anything less?) – a sort of drugged hiphop version of a classic… And everyone knows, that when covering something as huge as Back To Black, you have to go the complete polar opposite, or risk sounding like an Amy-Winehouse-Wannabe. Something not even Beyonce could pull off.
Beyonce may be covering, but she was also covered; by Emilie Sande singing B’s first hit, Crazy in Love.
Perfectly adapted for the 1920s – who would’ve thought an hip hop/R’n’B “body rocking'” (according to NME… not me) anthem could be transformed into a flapper’s swing song. I guess it was all already there in the horns…
And I will I leave you with some more highlights!
And of course, the powerful Love is Blindness by Jack White
