The Novellos: Lily, Paul and Paolo
Written by Jimmy
Of course, it is actually all about Paolo and Paul who won best album, but Lily is lugging around three awards so we have to mention her…
A bunch of things:
- The Ivor Novello awards honour song-writing. Named for David Ivor Davies, a Welsch songwriter. He wrote Keep the Home Fires Burning (Til the Boys Come Home), a WWI song that the ladies got all weepy about as the boys were abroad.
- Last night Lily won a bag full of awards for The Fear.
- Now I will confess, I remain a big Lily fan, even you’re not supposed to like her anymore – but we’ve seen her live a number of times and she’s very cool. she performs like our very own Imogen — she gives a great performance, while always looking like she’s making fun of the girl up there performing. Sort of sharing a joke with the audience that no one can possibly take any of this seriously. And I still love Smile.
- The bigger news is Paul Weller won for lifetime achievement – at 51. There are so many songs, but I’ll give my two, starting with That’s Entertainment:
- And the surprisingly beautiful You Do Something To Me:
- Neil Sedaka also won but I can’t be bothered to find a clip. Main reason is little time and we must include the BIG winner of the night, Paolo for Sunny Side Up. Here are three reasons why: Candy, Pencil Full of Lead and Coming Up Easy:
That’s It. Some nice Friday music.
