Summer 2009 Spanish Jam: The Fun Bits
Written by The Saturday Morning Canasta Club
Hello to all who might be reading this rather late update on our August jammin’ time!
I am using this blogging spot to give more juice on the background of our trip to Jimmy’s studio to Spain back in August, so that anyone who reads the newsletter can find out loads more! Plus, I’ve done plenty of research to jog my memory and want to include every single bit of information I can remember, because the newsletter format only allows for a tempting snippet, followed by a link. So here is where the link takes you to! Woop!
My job all those sunny months ago (it’s miserable outside my London window as I write this) was to organise the flights for the band and their partners. Yeah, sounds pretty straight forward, but trying to liaise with all band members, who in turn are liaising with girlfriends etc, while trying to hold on to cheapest easyJet options, was surprisingly tricky! And also, Mr EasyJet, please make your baggage allowance rules clearer AND make it clear that when you book a flight, it automatically assumes you want to take a hold bag – an option you have to opt OUT of if you’re happy with no liquids and little luggage. Phew. Glad I got that off my chest.
Car hire, as well, for some silly reason to do with credit-crunch-car-hire-predictions, was really pricey. TIP: anyone going to the south of Spain mid-Summer, shop around. Also, we pretty much stayed in the villa and garden for the entire 5 days (who needs to go anywhere else when you have a pool?), so value for money on car hire was rubbish.
Overview of what I remember: Jimmy had already providedĀ us with SIX sets of new lyrics (six new songs?! ‘mazin’) so we had loads of material for the studio.
Disco Rob discovered his Disco as he played his best bass rifs lying across the king size bed in the studio.
Andy put on his red shoes and got high on Coke (-a-Cola).
Ed and Helen taught us canasta (the best bloomin’ card game ever invented. Takes days to hear all the hundreds of rules).
Kane jumped through the hole in two lilos, one on top of the other.
We had a REALLY big, nasty bug in the pool.
Ceci perfected her party trick.
We had a lovely pizza trip into old town Marbella, wandering around the cobbled streets in the orange sodium glow of the lamps. Proper holiday, like.
Joy made the most amazing dinners and lunches. We ate so well! And much. We also drank so well, and much… oh! and the jacuzzi worked, but the sunscreen didn’t (apparently vinegar is the answer… Ed?).
And, finally, we wrote 5 new songs (2 of which may never see the light of day…that you’ll find on our August Newsletter Soundcloud player. Woops), worked on 3 more and, most importantly, found our collective, jammin’ groove. Mazin’.
