Voices. Winky from Seattle

Written by

My Voices duties have been hampered by my kids — we  have all three kids home again- first time in months and months.  The house is a mess and IIbuy milk daily, by the gallon, but I’mloving it.  But let’s get back to music and the Magpies – see my separate blog on Graceland Too as well.

We just had an extraordinary trip thru Memphis, listening to live music in every bar we visited.  And right now I’m listening to a CD we got in Memphis- a band called “the Magpies.  We heard them live and I bought their CD from their manager as my husband and I  were walking out the door.   The music was deafening and he held up CDs as we walked by.  I wordlessly held up a 20 dollar bill and he handed me two CDs…i gave him a thumbs up and that was that.

They were true Jerry Lee Lewis rockabilly live:

.

They had quite the piano player. but the whole band has been growing on me as I listen more and more.   Sadly, they are now defunct – as the Magpies, as the Hollers, as the Whiskey Hounds.    They played their last gig on July 3 2010.

Still, it is all about the music.  The CD I have on is “strangers” and the line that jumps out- from it and from that evening- is “why would i buy you diamonds when i get your kisses for free?”(track 3)

I also like Keep Me Away From You

And I loved Blueberry Wine.

As you can tell from that clip, the band’s is fronted by Roger Hoover.   He’s got some good songs as well.  Here’s The Girl on the Hill.

There’s lots more posted so check them out.   And let’s home the Magpies, the Whiskeyhounds and Hollers (all the same band) get back together – another talented band struggling in today’s music industry.  Their fans are all waiting for ‘the legendary live album’ and Roger promises it will come out regardless.

Let me know what you think…
