Background to Songs: The Only Thing That’s Missing

Written by

Verse, Verse, Chorus.  Repeat. Middle 8. Chorus.  That’s pretty typical.  This is Verse, Verse, Chorus, Chorus, Chorus.  We just couldn’t be bothered…

5 Things:

  1. Lyrically, song is at three levels.  Whoa.  Deep.  Level 3 sort of ruins it.  Not so deep.  Level 1 is just, London weather sucks.  Spain is better.  London Studio sucks. Spain is better.  Let’s bitch and discuss.  Level 2 is about a guy who’s not doin’ what he needs to do – not stepping up, he’s just missing.  Level 3 was we needed a line in a verse and came up with Seniorita Bonita.  Crap.  And it meant that now there’s a girl in Spain and one in London and so the guy really is a jerk.  All to get a couple words.  Finally, I just really like a song that stopped the whole ‘the only thing that is missing is you’ and went – nope, the only thing missing is me.
  2. The band couldn’t get over Gus’s singing of Fogged up Bus.  Everyone kept asking if I really wanted to be so ’15’ on the song.  I kept shouting thru the studio ‘Its fogged up bus, it’s fogged up bus.’  That apparently made things worse and sent Cello player into more laughter.  She laughs at funeral songs
  3. Martyn delivers a cracking, cracking guitar sol.
  4. Hannah delivers a cracking little ‘The only thing that’s missing’ bvox in outro that we love
  5. And, let’s not put too fine a point on it – we did reggae.  Sort of.  No steel drum.  But there’s Gus, singin’ away Marley-like.  Sort of.  A nice summer song we hope.
